I paid $49 for a Social Security Card, and now I read where I can get one free…

Q) I applied to get a new Social Securtiy card through the website. I paid $49 and now I read where I can get one free if my card was stolen. Not only did I pay for $49 for the information to mail in the card, I sent documentation along with the $49 postage and it was returned saying the documentation needed to be original. Now I am still out a Social Secruity card, I have paid $49 and I still have no card. Can someone please explain what to do to replace the stolen card FREE AND have my $49 reimbursed as to the fee I have paid?

A) The Social Security Administration does not charge for a Social Security card. Some private companies, not affiliated with Social Security or any other government agency, charge fees for this service. However, these companies offer no advantage and you will have to provide documents directly to Social Security. Be cautious about giving your private information, especially your Social Security number, to anyone.

According to Social Security Administration regarding Replacing your Card:

First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. To get a replacement card:

Step 1: Gather documents proving your:

Identity; and
U.S. citizenship or current work-authorized* immigration status.
*A noncitizen not permitted to work must show us a letter from a federal, state or local government agency that explains you need a number and meet all the requirements for a benefit.

Step 2: Complete an Application for a Social Security Card.

Step 3: Take or mail your completed application and documents to your local Social Security office.

All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Any documents you mail to us will be returned to you along with a receipt.
