I’m an adult who already struggles with Epilepsy and I take care of my mother with dementia and my father who recently had a stroke, Dr appointments, giving medication and recently taking iver the bills as well.

I have moved in and I have heard of financial assistance for family members who step up to take care of aging family members. Ive also been trying to get them more insurance but they need medicare part a and b to apply for one that i want, currently medicare options are open but for some reason i can not sign them up for part b right now. Basically I am confused, need some help and direction.

A) I understand that you’re in a challenging situation, taking care of your parents while also managing your own health concerns. Here are some resources that may be helpful:

  • Medicare: You mentioned that your parents need Medicare Part A and B to apply for additional insurance. Medicare Part A is typically free for most people who are eligible for Social Security benefits. Medicare Part B, on the other hand, requires a monthly premium. You can find more information about Medicare eligibility and enrollment on the Social Security Administration website: https://www.ssa.gov/medicare/
  • Financial Assistance: There are several programs that may be able to provide financial assistance to family caregivers. Some options to explore include:
    • Medicaid: Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides health coverage to low-income individuals and families. It may be able to help with some of your parents’ medical expenses.
    • Social Security: If your parents are eligible for Social Security benefits, they may also be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which can help with their living expenses.
    • Veterans Benefits: If your father is a veteran, he may be eligible for VA benefits, which can help with his medical expenses and other needs.
    • Local and State Programs: Many states and local communities offer programs to help family caregivers. You can contact your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) to learn more about available resources.
  • Caregiver Support: Taking care of aging parents can be physically and emotionally demanding. It’s important to take care of yourself as well. Here are some resources that can provide support and information:

I recommend reaching out to your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for personalized advice and assistance. They can help you navigate the complexities of the healthcare and social service systems and connect you with the resources you need. Sources and related content
